Causes and Treatment for Cluster Headaches

Causes and Treatment for Cluster Headaches

Author: Lee Dobbins

A very intense headache that is very painful and can occur periodically is called a cluster headache. These headaches occur due pressure on your trigeminal nerve but the cause of this pressure is unknown. These headaches can last for as short as 15 minutes or as long as 3 hours and can incapacitate you. Unlike migraines they can come on suddenly and with no forewarning.

Pain from a cluster headache is much worse than pain from a traditional headache. The pain from a cluster headache begins from behind your eye or temple and can spread throughout your neck and shoulders. Some frequently associated symptoms to a cluster headache are blushing, swelling, runny nose, droopy eyelid, tearing, sweating and red eye.

If you tend to get cluster headaches everyday at the same time for a number of days and then notice that you are headache free for some time before the cluster headaches begin again then you suffer from episodic cluster headaches. Those individuals that do not have a headache relief period but always get cluster headaches, every day suffer from chronic cluster headaches. You can be prone to both types of cluster headaches and switch between them.

Men tend to suffer from cluster headaches more than women, though women get more migraine headaches. Cluster headaches are cause by pressure exerted on your trigeminal nerve. This pressure comes from a dilation of your blood vessels. Doctors have no idea what causes this dilation as individuals have different triggers.

It is thought that there is some genetic factor to those that experience cluster headaches though it cannot be traced to one gene. Those whose parents suffer from cluster headaches tend to suffer cluster headaches themselves.

It is also possible that there is a genetic link tied to cluster headaches. If both or one of your parents suffer from cluster headaches then you will have a higher likelihood to suffer from them.

Over the counter pain medication like aspirin, Tylenol and Advil are ineffective and relieving cluster headache pain. You need to use either abortive or prophylactic medication to treat cluster headaches. Abortive treatments can decrease the length of your headache but does not eliminate them. Prophylactive or preventative treatment is always the preferred option.

Melatonin, lithium, methysergide, muscle relaxants, steroids, calcium channel blockers and magnesium supplements have all been found to prevent cluster headaches depending on the individual. You will respond differently to each treatment so it is important to pay attention to what causes your cluster headaches and which treatments work the best and preventing or shortening them. If you do not like taking medication there are some herbal treatments that some people have found to be effective against cluster headaches.

There\'s no need for you to suffer from cluster headache pain. If your ready to find headache relief, then visit Headache Causes And Treatments.com where you can learn more about what causes cluster headaches and find out about treatment options for cluster headaches.
